S Ramakrishnan belongs to the younger generation of Tamil fiction writers. Though he honed his skills by writing in the little magazines he put them to expedient use in the popular print (weekly magazines and middle[monthly] magazines) media and cinema. He started as a writer of short stories and ended up as a novelist. He is a tireless writer of travelogues and columns. He also works as a scriptwriter for the popular Tamil cinema industry. He has translated one book from English to Tamil-Alice in Wonderland. He is prolific and his output is enormous. He has written voluminous books on international cinema. He has about 6 collections of short stories and 4 novels. Notable among the novels is the one titled ‘Nendunguruthi’. He has written one play called ‘Aravan’. His short stories have been translated in German, French, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam.
