Arupa Patangia Kalita is one of the most well acclaimed novelists of contemporary Assam. Equally appreciated by critics and readers, she has been awarded Sailendra Nath Dasgupta Award from Sahitya Setu, West Bengal [1993], Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award [1995], and Katha Award [1998]. She rejected the Basanti Devi Award given to the best women writer in Assamese given by the Asom Sahitya Sabha in 1995. She is a lecturer in English at the Tongla College and has served as the assistant editor of Damol. Her works are Mriganabhi (1987), Mepol Habir Rong (The Colour of Maple Forests 1989), Marujatra aru Ananyo [Desert-sojourn and others], Ayananta [Dawn, Zubaan/ Penguin 1994], Marubhumit Menaka aru Ananyo [Menaka in the desert and others 1995], Deopaharor Bhagnastoop [The Ruins of Deopahar 1999], Kaitot Keteki [Thorny Ketekis 1999], Pach Chotalor Kothokota [Conversations from the Backyard 2000], Arunimar Swadesh [Arunima's Swadesh 2000], Mileniamor Sopun [Millenium's Dream 2002].
